Slice of Intern Life: Introduction

Hello! I’m Kallie Eisenzimmer and I’m excited to announce that I will be serving as the Communications and Outreach Intern for the Nebraska Wheat Board during this school year.  I have started my sophomore year at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln majoring in agribusiness with a minor in animal science.  I am also considering the 3 plus 3 program to  continue my education at the UNL Law School to pursue a career in agriculture law. 

I am from Big Springs, Nebraska where I grew up on a row crop and dryland farm raising wheat, corn, and soybeans.  I started helping on our family farm when I was about 10 years old driving a grain cart during wheat harvest.  Through the years I have taken on more responsibilities full time in the summers and learned a lot about various agricultural practices.  I have learned how to operate the summer till, disk corn stalks, run the combine in wheat harvest, check drip oil on center pivots along with learning how to change gear boxes and tires on center pivots.  I participated in 4-H for 11 years completing various static projects including an agronomy project of raising wheat.  I also showed livestock including horses, sheep, pigs, goats, rabbits and my dog.  I was active in my high school FFA serving as chapter President and Reporter along with competing in contests and community service. I will be receiving my American FFA Degree at the end of October at the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis.      

I have continued my passion for riding horses and high school rodeo by joining the UNL rodeo team competing in breakaway roping and traveling to amateur rodeos during the summers.  I am also a member of the Sigma Alpha Sorority and serve on the recruitment committee.

After a few weeks at my internship, I am excited to share what I have been working on. I have been doing press releases, updating the monthly Enews, posting radio reports, and I just started learning how to post the weekly crop reports.  I will be coordinating the interviews with board members and representatives from organizations that are funded by the Wheat Board for the weekly wheat report on KRVN radio.  I will also be responsible for the social media content on Facebook and Instagram, the weekly crop reports, press releases and the e-newsletter for the Nebraska Wheat Growers Association.  I had the opportunity to help with the booth at Husker Harvest Days in Grand Island to answer questions and provide support for the mission of the Nebraska Wheat Board. I also attended a whole wheat workshop by the Nebraska Extension during the Nebraska State Fair discussing the benefits of adding more whole wheat in a daily diet.

This year I am looking forward to learning more about the wheat industry and learning about what the Nebraska Wheat Board does. I am excited to learn what part of the world the wheat that I load into the semi off my grain cart could potentially end up in. And to learn what all the other countries in the world do with our wheat crop. I am also looking forward to enhancing my communication, social media management, and writing skills. This internship will be good for me to get out of my shell and reach out to other people for information to make a post. And it will also help me learn how to run Facebook on a business level and not just a personal one. I will also get better at writing articles and press releases from doing them in this internship which is something I haven’t done in the past.

This year will be filled with lots of new learning opportunities and I’m looking forward to the projects, experiences, and connections ahead of me this school year, and I am excited to share more in the future!
